The usual route runs through management-system auditing rather than a standalone ESG qualification. Most Malaysian ESG auditors start from an existing audit background — internal audit, or ISO management system auditing such as ISO 14001 environmental management — and add ESG-specific competence through a lead auditor programme for an ESG management system standard, of which the SIRIM 55 ESG Management System scheme is the main Malaysian route. Auditors working on the assurance side of sustainability reporting instead need reporting-standard fluency (GRI, IFRS S1 & S2) plus assurance methodology, since sustainability assurance follows a different evidence model from financial audit.
